A used-car checklist for Cairns buyers, from service history and warning lights to an independent pre-purchase inspection.

Check the paperwork and history

Match the vehicle identification details with its documents. Review the service history and ask about gaps, previous damage, major repairs, keys and any warning lights. In Queensland, check registration details and use the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) to check for a security interest or other recorded status before purchase.

Inspect it in daylight and take a proper drive

Look for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, corrosion, fluid leaks, damaged tyres and signs of poor repairs. Check that lights, windows, air conditioning and other equipment work. On a test drive, listen for unusual noises and note steering, braking, gear changes and warning lights. Do not rely on a short drive to reveal every problem.

Do not treat a safety certificate as a condition report

A safety certificate is not a complete assessment of a used vehicle’s mechanical condition or whether it suits your needs. RACQ recommends getting a professional pre-purchase inspection before committing to the purchase.

Arrange an independent inspection before you commit

An independent inspection can identify visible concerns and help you make a more informed decision. Ask what the inspection covers and whether the mechanic can inspect the car at the seller’s location. Provide the seller’s availability and vehicle details when booking.

Cairns-specific considerations

Ask how the car was used and stored. A vehicle regularly driven on rough or dusty roads, used for towing, or left near the coast may need closer attention to underbody condition, suspension, filters and signs of corrosion. These are prompts for inspection, not proof that a particular car has a fault.
