Five clues that your car air conditioning needs diagnosis in Cairns, and why weak cooling does not always mean it needs a regas.
1. The air is not as cold as it used to be
If the vents take longer to cool the cabin or never reach their usual temperature, there may be a refrigerant, airflow or component issue. Compare performance under similar conditions and note whether the problem is constant or intermittent.
2. Cooling changes while you drive
Cooling that comes and goes can point to a fault that needs diagnosis. Note when it happens: at idle, in traffic, at highway speed or after the car has been running for a while. Those details help narrow down the checks.
3. Airflow is weak
Low airflow can be caused by a cabin filter, fan or airflow-control problem. A regas will not fix a blocked filter or a blower fault, so it is useful to check airflow as well as temperature.
4. There is an unusual smell or noise
A musty smell may relate to moisture or the cabin air system. New clicking, rattling or squealing when the air conditioning is switched on can also warrant inspection. Turn the system off if a noise is severe and arrange advice.
5. The system needs repeated regassing
Refrigerant does not get “used up” like fuel. If the cooling fades again soon after a regas, the system may have a leak or another fault that needs attention. Ask for the system to be tested rather than repeatedly topping it up.
Regas or repair?
Weak cooling has several possible causes. A technician should check the system and use refrigerant approved for the vehicle. Queensland guidance says vehicle air conditioning gas work must be performed by a suitably licensed person and warns against unapproved gases.
